Seeing and Believing
My work is the result of a very personal and invented mysticism. My paintings are filled with characters and places just outside the confines of reality. I use my personal symbolism to portray the world as I prefer to see it through my imagination. The subjects in my paintings reflect a humble “otherworldliness”. They are approachable and yet intangible. Their intent is to question the believable.
The figures and animals are often gazing back at you. My hope is to engage the viewer into having a silent and pleasant dialog with the paintings. I hope that these strange, yet welcoming characters encourage viewers to become active in creating their own stories They are meant to illicit a response of reflection, calm and bewilderment.
I absolutely love art mediums and am consistently experimenting with different materials. My choice of technique and material change frequently in respect to the mood and framework I am hoping to portray in individual paintings. I work in cold-wax, oil, gouache, watercolor, graphite, acrylic, and soft pastel. Each piece that I work on has must be translated visually through materials, and so I adjust my approach with the mediums I use to best convey my thoughts, and ideas.
